The exchange of control codes or particular characters to maintain and coordinate data flow between two devices so that data is only transmitted when the receiving device is ready to accept the data.
Handshaking can be implemented in either hardware or software, and it occurs between a variety of devices. For example, the data flow might be from one computer to another computer or from a computer to a peripheral device, such as a modem or a printer.
